Changes are on the horizon for this year’s Wright County Fair including different grand opening dates and a new and improved carnival.

For this year’s fair, attendees can expect a much better carnival with what Wright County Fair Board 2008 Secretary Dennis Beise calls “the best in the state.”

“Our old carnival was like a Volkswagen, now we are getting a carnival like Cadillac,” Beise said.

Gold Star Amusements has more games, bigger rides, and is a more professional carnival, Beise explained. Some of the events where Gold Star has been are the Anoka, Carver, and Washington county fairs, and the Delano Fourth of July celebration, according to Beise.

In order to get this carnival, the dates of the fair had to be pushed back to Aug. 12-16, instead of its usual July dates.

In 2008, the Wright County Fair was lucky to have good weather bringing in more than 50,000 people – 7,000 more than in 2007.

For the second year in a row, the combine derby was a big hit. With a sold-out derby the previous year with general admission ticket sales, the board decided the 2008 derby would have reserved seating, which allowed 1,000 extra seats. Even with more seats, the derby was nearly soldout, Beise said.

Aside from the excitement of a new carnival, attendees can expect to have fun no matter what their age with 4-H animals and exhibits, savory fair food, live entertainment and music every day, and much more.

Young ladies from across Wright County have an opportunity to represent this fine fair in the Fairest of the Fair coronation. Here, an array of the county’s single women, ages 17-25, compete for the crown.

Those who are interested in serving as an ambassador for the Wright County Fair as the “Fairest of the Fair,” may contact Charlie Nelson at (763) 675-6705 or e-mail him at charlienelson@peternelson.com for information and an application.

For car smashing maniacs, the fair offers its demolition derby Friday and Sunday nights, which even includes a Powder Puff Derby, where ladies can have a smashing time as well.
