To the surprise of the book committee, a third printing of the new book “Howard Lake History, 130 Years of the Good Life,” was ordered due to strong interest expressed by more people.

During the summer of 2008, a paid-only second printing of the book was ordered, nearly equal in number to the first run.

Before that, the book sold out Friday morning of Good Neighbor Days during its first printing in June 2008.

The total number of books printed amounts to about 575, counting the third run.

Howard Lake native Jami Berg printed the History Book

Howard Lake native Jami Berg is the head of the printing department at Herald Journal Publishing, where he printed all three runs of the Howard Lake History Book.

The entire book (soft and hard cover) was printed with a modern digital printer in-house, with hard-bound binding done also in-house with new thermo binding equipment. The lettering on the front of the hard bound edition was individually done by Berg, with each book being personally stamped by him with an old fashioned small press that uses metal letters similar to letterpress.

The book was sold for cost and composed by a committee of six private citizens who donated their personal time toward the book – Stan Diers of Howard Lake, Marilyn Ringold of the Howard Lake Drug Store, Herald Journal Editor Lynda Jensen, village historian Mike Mitchell, and two former residents from the area, Doris Rodd and Barb Tonsberg. Literally thousands of hours of volunteer time went into the book.

The book contains the following (in part):

• Thirty years of headlines and photographs

• A page about the American Legion and Auxiliary

• Several pages on the history of the Orphans, including team shots and a picture of the reunion in 2005

• A section on HLWW

• Several pages documenting the all-time school sports records.

• A section on St. James School and St. James Church

• Pages devoted to St. John’s Church

• A section on Good Neighbor Days and royalty from the past 30 years

• Information about the Good Samaritan Center and Auxiliary

• A large section devoted to Howard Lake business history

• Reprints of articles about Red’s Pizza, the Scheer Popcorn Wagon, Ittel’s Meat Market

• A page devoted to the last fifty years of dairy royalty

• Old-time stories and photo gallery.

• Other articles that are too numerous to mention
