Current giving opportunities include therapeutic one-to-one kits used for residents most susceptible to isolation.

The group used money it has raised to set up caregram for residents and their families. The program started in the summer of 2010. It is an adaptive email system that makes it easy for residents and their families to keep in contact.

Lake Mary Association

The Lake Mary Association was organized in 1987, to improve Lake Mary’s water quality and protect it as a natural resource, thereby improving the quality of life around Lake Mary.

Lake Mary is located a few miles northeast of Winsted. Through its work, the association has spearheaded blacktopping a road on the east side of the lake, established a neighborhood watch program, provided education on septic systems and testing, and conducted annual meetings, including surveying its members’ interest in lake preservation.

The association is an active member of the Lake Quality Monitoring Program conducted through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The group is currently working on fish stocking and other community-spirited projects for the Lake Mary area. For instance, at the request of the Lake Association Board, the Victor Township supervisors agreed to erect “Watch for Pedestrians, 30 mph” signs around the lake to assure safety for those who desire to exercise, as well as enjoy the beauty of Lake Mary.

Membership is open to anyone interested in contributing to the quality of Lake Mary. To join, call Mike Ollig at (320) 485-4242, or write the Lake Mary’s Homeowners Association c/o Mike Ollig, 10932 Grunwald Avenue SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349.

Lake Ann Improvement Association

The Lake Ann Improvement Association was originally incorporated in 1984, and has newly incorporated and reorganized with new by-laws and board members in 2003. The objectives of the association are to protect, restore, and preserve the water quality of the lake and its watershed, thereby enhancing the community in which residents live. Lake Ann is located between Howard Lake and Winsted, off of Wright County Road 6. There are 47 property owners who own land surrounding the lakeshore.

For many years, concerned residents have put forth efforts to protect the quality of the waters and the fishery. The original association made much progress in organizing efforts to establish a public landing, stock the lake with walleye, and bring the lake community together. In 1996, the association participated in the MPCA sponsored Lake Assessment Program (LAP). This reset the tone for the association’s focus concerning lake management activities.

As part of the LAP study, the association has worked to get its septic systems around the lake in compliance – and have been successful. Since 1996, the association has continued to monitor precipitation records and DNR lake levels and report them to the state. Since 1999, it has done water clarity measurements on water from the ditch that enters the lake. The board has been very active in the Shoreland Volunteer Program.

Annually, the association hosts spring meetings and a fall picnic, along with other special events to keep the community together and educated on the activities and goals of the association. The association has established a buffer program with the assistance of the Wright County Soil & Water Conservation District, and to-date, the association has established just more than 32 acres of buffer in the watershed and committed just more than $4,000 over five years.

Additionally, the association has cooperated with the farmers and with the SWCD to install various French drains and other diversions to minimize runoff into the streams and lakes. These activities helped earn the association the award as Outstanding Wright County Conservation Cooperator of the Year from the Minnesota Association of SWCD in 2000. The Lake Ann Improvement Association has also been an initiator in developing the Wright County Lakes Monitoring Program, now in action for its second year.

Association membership is available to anyone interested by paying annual dues of $35. For more information, contact Frank Broghammer at (320) 543-2927.

The association sponsors a business expo each spring, which attracts more than 1,000 visitors. Howard Lake Watershed Alliance

The goal of the Howard Lake Watershed Alliance is to help protect, maintain, and enhance the waters of and surrounding watershed for Howard Lake. The organization provides educational resources, activities, and tasks to achieve this goal. Information is shared through local cable television and newspaper articles, as well as meetings and newsletters.

The original lake association was deeply concerned with the water quality of Howard Lake. In early 2002, Howard Lake was accepted into a joint study venture with Wright County Soil and Water Conservation and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, which took in the lake, as well as its watershed area. As a result of this broadening venture, the group’s bylaws and incorporation were amended in 2004 and the group was renamed the Howard Lake Watershed Alliance. This action promoted the group to become more focused on total lake and watershed management.

The lake has been monitored since 2000 for trends in clarity and nutrient loading. In 2003, a program to control nuisance aquatic vegetation was initiated. A grant from the Minnesota DNR was received in 2007 for a vegetation study to determine how invasive aquatic species are affecting the lake.

The alliance has a strong body of volunteers who work to achieve the goals of the organization. The board of directors meets quarterly, with an annual meeting in June. A newsletter is published two times per year. Contact Curt Forst at (320) 543-3736 for further information concerning the Howard Lake Watershed Alliance.
